About this Accreditation
The Airport Carbon Accreditation Program is based on internationally recognized methodologies: the GHG Protocol. It provides airports with a common framework for active carbon management, with measurable objectives. Its popularity is also linked to increased airport profitability through better management of energy consumption. By 2023, over 500 airports had been accredited worldwide.Â
Level 1: Mapping
At Level 1 ‘Mapping’ of Airport Carbon Accreditation, airports are required to measure and inventorise their carbon footprint.
Footprint measurement
- Determine emissions sources within the operational boundary of the airport company.
- Calculate the annual carbon emissions.
- Compile a carbon footprint report.
Level 2: Reduction
At Level 2 ‘Reduction’ of Airport Carbon Accreditation, airports are required to set up their carbon management and progress towards a reduced carbon footprint.
How to achieve it?
Carbon management towards a reduced carbon footprint
- All of the above plus:
- Provide evidence of effective carbon management procedures.
- Show quantified emissions reductions.
